A custom vehicle build is so much more than the sum of its parts. The personality of a custom vehicle has an almost intangible quality to it, combining the owner's tastes, quality of parts used, and the virtues of the original vehicle all into one unique package. While this can be a good thing, screwing up one of those parts can turn the entire vehicle from an awesome custom into a laughable piece of junk.

Paint schemes tend to be where a lot of custom builds go horribly wrong. Choosing the cheapest parts may ruin how the vehicle performs, but only the owner will know about that, a terrible paint scheme, on the other hand, is painfully obvious to everyone who has the misfortune of looking at it.

With technological advances making wraps cheaper than ever, as well as airbrushes and spray paint being child's play to learn, almost anyone can transform their vehicle with a custom look. But that can backfire spectacularly, turning what seemed like a good idea into a horrible mess to look at.

So read on, to see 15 examples of trucks ruined by a bad paint job:

15 Sick, But Not In A Good Way

Painting flame or splatter patterns on your truck isn't anything new, and while it can be pretty ugly, it can look good if done right. This though is an example of those patterns being butchered into something horribly ugly.

Instead of looking like a mud splatter (what we can only assume was the intended result), it looks like a cartoon character vomited all over the wheels and side of the truck. All they had to do to avoid this result was not paint it that disgusting shade of green.

14 Inspired By Nightmares

While a lot of paint jobs turn out ugly because of a lack of artistic talent, or a coherent design, this one has both artistic, and technical skills, as well as a fully thought through design. Unfortunately, that design looks like something you'd see in a nightmare, with a wall of flesh covered in faces that are laughing, staring, and screaming at you. At least the effort put in is respectable.

13 How To Make An Ugly Truck Even Uglier

Ugliest Subaru Baja Truck
Via Reddit

If you've ever heard of the Subaru Baja, you probably know it as one of the ugliest pickup trucks of all time, ridiculed by just about everyone when it was released. While they have a cult following now, there's no denying how ugly they are. This owner, though, seemed to think it wasn't ugly enough in stock form, and proceeded to give their Baja a paint job with no color coordination or logic involved. It's so ugly, it's almost an accomplishment.

12 Holographic Hauler

Holographic chrome wraps are pretty damn ugly, to begin with, turning whatever vehicle they are put on into a strange, blindingly reflective mess of a car. While making a sports car flashy makes a bit of sense, doing this to a truck really just looks awful, there's no way around it. If you happen to be one of the rare few people who like the style, this flashy Ford can be yours for $100,000.

11 5th Grade Art Class Never Ended

In case you're unfamiliar with tailgate murals, the results can be interesting, if not strange, when painted by someone with talent. Unfortunately, it doesn't take an experienced artist to buy an airbrush and lay down some truly ugly "art" on the back of a truck. This happens to be one of the really bad examples, but we'll stay optimistic here, and assume the truck owner's child painted it as an art project.

10 Luxurious Aspirations, Eyesore Results

Gucci has authorized Gucci edition vehicles like the Fiat 500 in the past, but Cadillac's awful attempt at a luxury truck was never touched by the Italian fashion brand. This owner clearly hopes that nobody questions how awful of a truck this is ("It's a Cadillac! It's Luxury!"), or how genuine the Gucci logos slathered all over the truck are (they aren't). It's hard to respect this obvious attempt at showing off, especially with how ugly it is.

9 Catch Of The Day

While this is by no means a good paint job, it's a lot more respectable than fake Gucci logos covering the entire truck. While it rarely ever looks good, if you must give your truck a complete paint job with only spray paint, this is the way to go about it. The Trout theme makes it clear this is a truck used to go fishing, it's kinda funny, and it's not trying hard to show off and "flex" like the Gucci truck. Regardless, it's damn ugly.

8 If Shrek Drove A Chevy

Chevrolet's strange Hot Rod inspired sports truck, the SSR, is one of the weirdest trucks out there to begin with, but it does look pretty good with the right paint job. This though, is far from what you would call the right paint job. Either gloss green or brown on their own would look decent on an SSR, but having the paint transition between the two makes it look less like a Hot Rod, and more like a Shrek themed vehicle.

7 Taking A Real Super Duty

Via Reddit

While this is an undeniably ugly paint job, it's almost impossible to hate it. Work trucks should be functional and advertise the business that relies upon it, this plumber truck does that perfectly and creatively. The best part is the driver seems to be enjoying himself, which shows that they know it's ugly, but that it was done for fun and isn't being taken too seriously.

6 The Scariest Part Is That Someone thinks This Looks good

Via Reddit

When it comes to fully themed vehicle paint jobs, people tend to choose something that both looks good and is special to them. Painting an entire truck like this is too much effort for a joke, which means someone genuinely thinks a mural of evil clowns looks great on a truck. All the more power to them for knowing what they like, and doing what they want, but they're most likely alone in thinking it looks good.

5 Where Is Her Neck?

I feel the need to apologize to the last tailgate artwork on this list. It could've been far, far, far worse. How much worse? Just take a closer look at this. Human anatomy is hard to get right in paintings, but this is just so bad. You have to wonder if they were even looking at a human being when they painted this. There's no neck or torso to speak of, and that's not even mentioning the alien-looking legs and arms. I feel bad for anyone stuck behind this truck in traffic.

4 Low Color Coordination Low Rider

I have a bit of a soft spot for lowered mini trucks, as useless as they may be. It's hilariously awesome seeing what should be a work vehicle sitting so low, especially with air suspension to raise it back up.

The wild paint jobs are part of the fun, but this one falls short because of a complete lack of harmony between the color choices. Lime green, brown, orange, purple, and black do not match at all, especially with such crazy looking graphics. A shame as this is an awesome looking build otherwise.

3 Rejected Hot Wheels Design

Via UglyTruckDay.com

Although compared to this pile of junk, that Mini Truck is a sight for sore eyes. While it can be hard to match colors while still expressing yourself, this is a direct insult to anyone who isn't colorblind, or actually cares about proper aesthetics. Instead, neon plastic is scatted all over the truck, with a paint job that makes absolutely no sense. At least the lift kit looks properly done. Hopefully, it's actually used for off-roading, the body being covered in mud would be a vast improvement here.

2 Why Watch Anime When You Can Just Tailgate This Guy?

Covering your vehicle in Anime characters makes some sense for vehicles like JDM drift cars, it's awful looking and downright confusing on the tailgate of this old truck though. While the previous tailgate artwork shows that this isn't a trend based in good taste or logic, covering the entire thing in various Anime characters goes a bit beyond, instead creating a visual mess that is not at all pleasant to look at...

1 They Aren't Laughing With You

Incredibly ugly horrible truck paint job

Personally, I'd rather be stuck behind that Anime truck than this horrifying attempt at a painting of the Joker. Setting personal taste aside, this is downright disgusting. The Joker's forehead seems to be bigger than the rest of his face and the eyes and mouth look strangely distorted. Overall, it's just bad and freaky to look at. On the other hand, someone who covers their tailgate with the Joker probably wants that kind of reaction.
